Julia Bartel
MLITT IN THEOLOGY AND THE ARTS STUDENT
Hometown: Raleigh, NC, USA / Toronto, ON, Canada
Education: B.A. in English Literature, Book & Media Studies, Creative Expression & Society from the University of Toronto, Canada
Academic Interests
Julia is interested in the sacramental nature of art, ranging from the English Romantics to contemporary pop culture. Some recent areas of interest include the enchantment possibilities of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Catholic imagery as depicted in Marvel’s Daredevil, and the contrasts in theological vision between the English Romantic and Scottish Romantic movements. Overall, Julia is fascinated by the ways that art reflects the gospel and the transcendentals of Truth, Goodness, and Beauty, even–and especially when–it comes from “outside” the church.
Other Interests
Julia can categorize her life into periods of obsession over different pop cultural artifacts. Her recent favourites include BBC’s All Creatures Great & Small, Top Gun: Maverick, Dune, Stardew Valley, Dungeons & Dragons, and anything starring Ben Barnes or Oscar Isaac.
Outside of her studies, Julia likes knitting, film photography, playing violin, playing cozy video games on Nintendo Switch, reading and writing fiction, dabbling in poetry, and drinking flavoured lattés in cafés for the aesthetic. In 2023 she plans to undertake the ambitious project of knitting a pair of socks for each Taylor Swift album.
