Cameron Shippee

PHD CANDIDATE

Hometown: Lakeville, Massachusetts, USA

Education: BA, Music and Spanish, Saint Michael’s College (Colchester, VT)
MLitt, Sacred Music, University of St Andrews

Academic Interests
Under the supervision of Professor George Corbett and Dr Michael Ferguson, Cameron’s research focuses on the development of Catholic liturgy in medieval Scotland. His project, with the working title ‘Dressing the Vine of Tradition: The Development of Catholic Liturgy in Scotland: 1400-1550’, presents a series of case studies utilising extant liturgical texts and fragments from the pre-Reformation period to shed light on the factors that guided the evolution of the sacred rites in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. These historical findings will be compared to the definition of ‘organic development’ offered by Alcuin Reid and Joseph Ratzinger’s liturgical theology to determine whether the concept of ‘organic liturgical development’, as it is widely understood in the twenty-first century, is truly applicable to the evolution of Catholic worship practices during the Middle Ages. Thus, Cameron hopes that his research will provide a timely and vital historical perspective to the present-day debates about Catholic liturgy.

Cameron’s research is generously funded by the Scottish Graduate School for Arts and Humanities.

Other Interests
Having served as a music director for congregations in variety of denominations, Cameron has a particular interest in the role of church music ministry in pastoral care. When he doesn’t have his nose in a book, he enjoys cooking for family and friends, or going for walks along the beach.
